SERIOUS RAILWAY ACCIDENT NEAR WANGANUI.

A sebious railway accident occurred at Kai Iwi, abont thirteen miles from Wanganui, on Friday evening last. Mrs. Guard, a native woman, wife of a resident at Port Underwood, was a passenger by the train. She alighted, and went into the Btacion at Kai Iwi, and did not come out to resume her seat until the train had commenced to move. She made a rush, and jumped' for the train, but slipped, and fell. She was caught in one of the wheels, and turned over and over, and finally had her foot jammed in the wheel. When she was picked np, it was found that one foot had been badly crushed, the toes being taken off, that dhe had sustained fracture of one shoulder, and was badly bruised about tbe body. She was taken to Patea, seen by the doctor, and ordered into the hospital. Mrs. Guard was on her way to Opunake to see about some land claims she has there. An informant tells the Hawera Star, from which paper we take the above particulars, that to the driver of the train is due gieat credit for the prompt manner in which he acted, and that bat for his prompt action in stopping the train the woman must have been killed.
