The following tenders for alterations and additions to the Mangorei School were opened at the Education Board on Wednesday : — Messrs. Webberley and Hart, £42 15s (accepted) ; G. Cliff, £45 ; J. Fowler, £47 ; M. Jones, £47 15s ; W. H. Scott, £53.

The Inspector's reports on the schools in the district were read at the Education Board on Wednesday. Some were very good, that id, in reference to the teaching etc., while other b were not.

In response to an advertisement, the following applications were received for the teachersbip of the Bahota Sshool, at the Education Board on Wednesday : — Messrs. S. E. R. K.aus, Alfred Bell, Alfred Blake. References were sent with the applications. It was decided to send the names of the applicants, etc., to tne Rahotu School Committee, in the order Bell, Brake, Klaus, for the selection of one, and pointing out as none of the applicants hold a certificate, the selected one can only hold a montbly appointment.

Mr. W. Cowern, the agent for the Education Board at Patea, forwarded a letter from Edward Newing, who is in occupation of one of the Board's reserves at Waimate, and who is £90 iv arrears with rent. In the letter, Mr. Newing stated that, be would not meet the f'ufl payment by September 26 (he was requested to do bo on September 13), but said he could manage to find £60, if the Board would accept that in payment of the Lalf-year's rent. It was decided to infoim Mr, Newing that the Board will accept the sum of £60 as a payment on account of rent.

At the Education Board meeting on Wednesday a letter was read from Mr. Dempaey, the head master of the Central School, in which it was stated that the average uttendance at the school last week was 330, as against 439 for the month of Angust. The attendance was still going down, there being to-day (Wednesday) 294, the day before 327, and on Monday 300. The majority of the children attending are suffering from colds. Four of the teachers, namely, Misses Blair, Hamtfrton, Saddler, and Smith were away lust week. The first and last have not yet returned. He had locked up the Uourtenay-utreet school and taken the infants to the > Central. In reference to this letter Miss 'Hey wood moved : — "That the attention of the New Plymouth and Waitara School Committees be drawn to i he iact that some ot their staff have been übsenl on the plea of illness without forwarding medical certificates." Seconded by Mrs. Richmond and carried.

Mr. Olson moved at the Education Board to-day to reduce the Inspector's salary and travelling expenses from £450 to £350. Mrs. Richmond seconded the proposition. Mr. Buuchope moved an amendment to the fcHett to postpone the matter of retrenchment until Parliament met in order to see if there was any curtailment in the Estimates, and then act According to the funds, they would derive after Government retrenchment. Mr. Faull seconded the amendment, which was carried. Ayes : The Chairman, Miss Heyv»ood, Messrs. Syme, Andrews, and Faull. Noes : Mrs. Richmond, Meesrß. Olson, and Adhitn.
