EDUCATION BOARD.

THIS DAY. The Education Board met on Wednesday. Present : Miss Heywood, Mrs. Richmond, and Messrs. Bauchope i(in the chair), Faull, Olson, Adlam, Andrews, and Syme.

. Memo. — Mr. T. Humphries, of Crown Lands, wrote in reply to a memo from the Board in reference to the survey of the school sites in the Hua and Wawaikaiho and Moa. He said that such work did not come within the work of the Crown Lands Department, but possibly the Board could get the School Commissioners to survey the sites. — The letter was referred to the School Commissioners for consideration.

An account.— An account for £1 ss, due to R. Pigott, and payable by the Board, was forwarded by the Urenui Sobool Committee. — The account was passed.

Ohato. — On the recommendation of the Okato School Committee, Master W. Bennie was appointed pupil teacher to the school there, the appointment to date from October 1. , Inglewood. — In "accordance with a resolution of the Education Board, the laglewood School Committee nominated Miss G. Corney to the vacant pupil teaohership at Inglewood School. — The Board approved of the nominee, whose appointment will date from October 1.

Architect's Report. — The Architect in his report stated that some holes in the Central School playground needed filling in, and some drain pipes at the west end of the building needed to be covered with earth. He also recommended a coat of fine gravel to be strewn in front of the building, and some tan bark was required to put around the swings. At the Courtenay-street school some gravel was wanted, and a new stand for a swing. The spouting and fireplace also required attention. At the West Infants' Sobool . some gravel was required. For the needs mentioned he estimated £15 would cover expenses. In reference to the Inglewood School, he said he had arranged with the Chairman of the Committee to have it built during the holidays. As regards the Ureuui School chimney, he said he bad inspected it, and was surprised to find it porfectly sound, and he considered it stronger now than when newly built. Mr. Pigott, the chairman of the local committee, told him, in conversation, that a new chimney was unnecessary. Mr. Pigott said 9s. had been spent in painting the chimney. The offices at tho West Infants' school had been completed, und the drainage yvqb being attended to. The report, as ±ar as matters connected with the town school were concerned, was held over till next meeting for consideration.

District License. — The Education Department, Wellington, intimated that the question of granting a district license to Miss B. Cliff would be dealt with by the Inspeotor-General on his return from the south, which would be in three weeks from then (September 21). Waitara. — Mr. J. R. Clark, Chairman of the Waitara School Committee, wrote, intimating that the West School was closed on account of illness of the teachers. — It was decided that the Inspector should arrange with the Committee as ,to providing assistance to tho West School during the illness of the teachers.

Inglewood. — Mr. N. King forwarded a letter from Mr. W. H. Franklyn, of Inglewocd, in reference to the recent sale of the old boys' school there. — It seems that when the school was sold there was some furniture in it, which the Board said was not sold with the school, — Mr. Franklyn stated in the letter that he wag led to believe that the furniture mentioned was to bo sold with the building, and ha therefore claimed it. — The Board decided that Mr. Bauchope should wait on Mr. N. King about the Bule of the building.
