ATTEMPT TO DESTROY A NEWS
PAPER OFFICE IN WELLINGTON. There was a very narrow escape from a most serious explosion in the Times office on Wednesday night, says the Press. It appears that some malicious person had gone into the sub-editor's room in the abseace of the staff, and had turned on the three jets of gas • without lighting them. The door was afterwards closed, and an apertare in the door blocked. When the sub-e-litor (Mr. Mansford) arrived ehortly after 6 o'clock he entered the room with a match in bis hand intending to strike it when inside. < It 'was fortunate he did not, for the room was full of escaped gas, and had n light been applied the upper portion of ihe office mußt certainly have beer reduced to ruins, while Mr. Mansford could not have escaped either death or very serious injury. No possible reason can be assigned for the malicious act, but tho matter will be closely investigated, and it is to be hoped tbe culprit will be discovered. „
