aider the loss suffered by the destruction of the ship-building business; the throwing out of employment of what might have been hundreds of thousands of ship-builderß, sailors, wharfingers, warehousemen, and all the other callings connected with (he salt water business; the freights that might have been earned, to say nothing oE the grand position of supremacy which they might have held in all the -oceans and ports of the world. Can anything that Protection has given them compensate for the ruinous national loss indicated by these few items ? "
