EDUCATION.
Now I state that it has never been proved that the prosperity and education of a Stats are synonomous terms. I wish to say a few words on whether education unfits ohildren for a life of manual labor. Now. the advocates of the present education scheme state that every child should be compelled to pass the sixth standard. I would like to know, what is the averago age of children who at the present time pass that standard ? and, secondly, how many years have they been training to pass it ? If some of your readers would kindly furnish me with statistics on these points I shall be able to come to a conclusion, and with your permission will then go more fully into the subject.
It may be interesting to your readers to know the aotual number, of hours required by the pupil teachers to fit them for their work :— 8 to 9 a.m., lessons; 9.30 to 12 noon, teaching; 1 to 3, teaching; 3 to 3 30, children kept in; 3.30 to 4, correcting and setting work ; 7to 12, home lessons. Saturdays (after September 10) : 11.20 to 1, training class. It gives over 59 hours a week real hard work. This is training with a vengeance. — I am, &c,
Education.
