[PEtt' UNITED PKESS ASSOOIAIION.] H.M.S. OPAL GOES TO NOUMEA. Auckland, Auckland 29. The captain of H.M.S. Opal has received orders to proceed to Noumea and the Islands at once. COST OF IIAIiBOUK DEFENCES. Sir R. Stout, replying to a question from the Political Association, larnishes the following information : — The total cost of the harbour defences of the colony, including amouufcs paid for land, etc., erecting of all buildings, forts, with the expenses of preparing sites, making roads, etc., £155,2-18 ; tho sum paid for guns, ammunition, electric light, torpedo boats, £158,689, up to 81st March,
GISBORNE PETROLEUM COMPANY. Chjristohurch, August 29. At the half-yearly meeting of the Southern Cross Petroleum Company the balance-sheet showed the halfyear's expenditure to be £1,657 ; tho total expenditure £28,839. The assetti are £7,598. The Chairman, who has just returned from the works, reports a good show of oil in the pipea. BIFLE ASSOCIATION. At a meeting of the members of the Rifle Association it was the general feeling that the Remington-Lee rifles exclusively should not be used at the next meeting.
