In the Honse of Commons, yesterday, "the oonaideration- of the motion for the first reading of the Irish Crimes Bill was resumed, when an animated debate took place on Mr. ParnelFs counter motion " That the House should forthwith go into Committee to consider the state of Ireland.'* The The discussion continued for some hours,- and Mr. Smith finally moved that under the oloture rule the question be now put. The motion was adopted by 861 to 253 votes. When the vote was recorded, Mr. Gladstone, with the whole body of the Radical section and the' ParnelUtes, left the House in a body. The bill was then read a first time without opposition. PRESS ON GLADSTONE'S SPEECH. Commenting on the important speeoh delivered by Mr. Gladstone in the House of Commons on the Crimes Bill, the Times declares strongly against the speeoh, and avers it was unreasonable and the speaker guilty of determined blindness to the best interests of the nation. The Morning Post- refers to -the views previously enunciated by Mr. Gladstone on Irish affairs, and remarks that he must be ouriously oblivious to the past. The Daily. JNews warmly eulogises the speeoh, and congratulates him on his fidelity to the. principles promulgated last year, which are necessary for dealing with Ireland, adding that Mr. Gladstone is a true Liberal. The Daily Telegraph, in an incisive criticism, asserts that the speeoh is utterly faulty. The Standaid considers that the speeoh (owing principally to the absence of all indication on the part of Mr. Gladstone of any modification of his extreme views) will have the' effect of strengthening the hands of the Government. DEATH OF BARON HINDLIP. London, April 4. The death is announced of Baron Hindlip, in his 77th year. "IMPERIAL CONFERENCE. Imperial Conference : — Defenoes of Australian ports and of Torres r Straits, erection of coaling stations, laying cables between Great Britain and .the colonies, subsidising of Cable Companies, provisioning harbors, . supplying armed cruisers in the Pacifio, inorease of colonial naval squadron, creating facilities for officers of the Imperial armies serving in the colonies, their relations with foreign powers, and their, connection with the English colonies, postal ordinance, provision for greater facilities for saving life at sea, the ratification of the ■ oolonial judgments, marriage with deceased wife's sister, and simultaneous census ot the entire empire. OPPOSITION TO CELEBRATION OF JUBILEE. The feeling of opposition manifested as to the mode of celebrating the Queen's Jubilee in London is on the inorease, and the suburb of Islington has deoided not to support the present movement. NEW SOUTH WALES POLITICS. -The publication of the financial proposals of the Parkes Ministry has had an exoellent effect. One result of the announcement that no loan would be floated for some time is that New South Wales stock has be- . come firmer. . GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG, Sir George F.
