The Taranaki Herald. PUBLISHED DAILY. FRIDAY, APRIL 1, 1887.
The vital statistics for the Borough of New Plymouth for March ara — Births, 20; deaths, 4; marriages, 6. The b.s. Penguin, with the 'Frisco mail, learea Manukau this afternoon's tide, is due early to-morrow morning, and sails for Wellington immediately after arrival. It ia averred that one or two Taranaki boys have been making ft rare harvest during the raoe jays ia doing what is called l " bearing up " for the magsmen and speelers who have recently been polluting toe utmoßphere of this moat Edenlike of localities. In order .to lead on the "'greenhorns!' these lads were chartered to win big pools, which wore to be given back, and their services weie then to be rewarded by the payment of a few shillings. In one case a lad was actually allowed to win a sum of money which ran into double figures, £26 bis fellow juveniles say, and he received Bs. for bis day's work. It seems highly' improbable that any of our rising generation should thus fraternise with such characters. It would huve seemed much more patural if the Taranaki boy had taken a short cut home when the time of payment and repayment arrived. Mr. Evett's handicapping gave rise to bo much general satisfaction that at the conolasion of the meeting on Friday the orowd in the lawn gave him three cheers. The following gentletneu will represent the Wanganui Bowling Olub in the match with the looal olub, to be played on Friday next (—No. 1 rink ; Messrs. phavannes, Spardle, Ross, and Bennie (skip). No. 2 rink: Messrs. Paterson, Tawse, Bush, and A. Laird (skip). No. 3 rink ; Dr. Bell, Messrs. Culpan, Young, and Notman (skip). Mr. Downes, secretary of the local club, informs us that the vieitors will probably arrive bore pa Thursday evening.
