A CHAPTER OF ACCIDENTS.

A conious chapter of accidents happened on Wednesday. Mr. J. C. Davies and Mr. J. O. George arranged to meet at tho Postoffice and ride down to the breakwater. Oa arriving at tho meeting place Mr Davies found Mr. George, limping and leading his horse. It seems that one of the front shoes of Mr. -George's horse had become lcosa at the heel, and tbac when the horße was cantering along it had trodden with one of its hind feet upon the loose shoe and tumbled over. Mr. George's foot got jammed betwcea the horse and the ground, and was painfully crushed. Mr. Uavies therefore had to go on to tho port by himself. On arriving at that narrow portion of the port road betweenUthe 1 cutting and the railway he met Mrs. W. Black and a party of ladies in a trap. Both hauled up, and approached each other at a walk. Mr. Davies tried to get his horse to keep in close to the bank, but it swerved from' the gutter, and its flank bcin^ touched by the axle of Mrg.i Black's vehicle it jumped round quickly, jamming its head against the bank and its rump against the wheel. The result was that it fell, partly upon its rider. la its struggles the horse kicked out, and got its leg over the wheel. Tho moment Mr. Davies was free he hastened to the head of Mrs. Black's horso iv casts it should become restive.^ It so happened .that Mr. Paul, Capt. Wheeler, and other gentlemen were driving iv Mr. Julian's conveyance behind Mrs. Black, and on the accident occurring they ran right into the leading vehicle, tho pole smaphing inta the ladies' trap. When tho two traps and the horse wero cleared it was found that no ono was at all injured. M r s. W. Black'a bu^gy, howcvoi, which was quite new, hid its axle bent, and the wheel wus vtry much out of tho straight, with most ot

its spokes smashed out. Air. Uavies horse had ono of its hind legs badly grazed, tho effects of getting mixed up with tho wheel. Ihe ladies behaved with most remarkable coolness aud aelf-pqsses-sion. As their veljicle was too far gone to be moved they were accommodated with seats in Mr. Julian's conveyance, and came to town by that means, leaving their trap behind. Mr. J. O. Davies uubarnossed Mrs. lilack'a horse, aud brought it up to town later on. M-iny complaints have been made about lbs narrowness of the port road wheie it runs alon^ the cutting, aud seeing tint it is only with great dillidifliculty that two vehicles cdv pass, something cert.iinly sould be done to it.
