THE VOLUNTEER REVIEW IN TARANAKI.
We are indebted to the courtesy o£ Sir George Whitmore, who is at present in New Plj'monlh. for tho following particulars of the Volunteer Review, which it is intended to hold in Taranaki next Easter. It is expected that there will be between 3,000 and 4,000 volunteers present, the i force being gathered from Auckland, Thames, Hawke's Bay, Wanganui, Manawatu, Wellington, Wairarapa, Nelson, Murlborough, Westland, and Canterbury. The volunteers who come by sea, as those will from the north, will land at tho breakwater. Aa the railway to Wellington will be opened by then, great facilities will exist for bringing the southern volunteers to the camp. One object in view in l these camps is to demonstrate the feasibility o£_ concentrating large bodies of troops quickly in any part oE tho colony, and another is to give the officers and men training in the duties which are required to be performed in moving from one district to another. So that in reality the distance which, say the Canterbury men have to travel to get here, is looked upon as rather an advantage to them in this latter respect, aa they will have a lengthy experience in travelling by the time they reach tho camp and return home. Of course the benefits derivable from the collection b 4 f the forces in a large camp, and the participation in large review movements, -are also most considerable, ub it gives the men an opportunity of becoming acquainted with battalion movements, and other exercises other than mere company drill. Sir G. Whitmore has not yet decided upon tho site for Hie camp. The difficulty is to find a space sufficiently clear of fences to admit of the movements of artillery without the fences having to be damaged and gaps made.
