A GAOLER IN DIFFICULTIES.

The following is from a recent Australian j] paper; — Although representatives of every , e;rade— from gentlemen "honorable within j the colony" downwards — occasionally j seek relief in the Insolvent Court, it isj seldom that a gaoler finds it necessary to> surrender his estate for the benefit of creditors. Recently, however, in Sidney,' Mr. Thomas Allen, described as a gaoler; and a resident of Yaas, was adjudged insolvent. And the peculiarity ot thepoßi-. tiou is heightened by the somewhat' singular reason which Mr. Allen gives for hiß seeking the protection of the Court, j In hia affidavit he sayß:— " I attri- 1 bute my insolvency to the pressure of one of my creditors named; John James Main, who has caused a writ oi fieri facias to issue out of tbe Supreme Court of JSew South Wales for' the sum of £161 17b. 7d., and the Bheriff's bailiff in now in possession of |my effects. The said debt arose in the year 1883, under th» following circumstances, namely : — I was gaoler at Albury gaol' and the said John James Main was' a confinee therein, and made application to me, under the habeas Corpus Act, for a copy' of tbe warrant by which he was retained in custody ; and I, not being aware of the existence of the said Act, declined to give a copy. And judgment was allowed to 1 go by default against me for the full penalty thereunder* 1 have a wife and a; large iamily to support, and am unublo to pay Baid judgment und costs."
