MAORIS PLOUGHING AT OKATO.
Mr. Pardy ? who wont to Hiiwera last week iuoonneelioif with tho Maoris ploughing on Mr. Lysaglifs land at Wokoiu, has not yet luturned, and will probably remain on tho spot unl.il he is assured that no further trespass will bo committed. Informutioa has been received that tho natives had also been ploughing in the Oiikura township, but in this instanco tho particular plot of land which has been ploughed is tho riehtful property of a native named We Kuioi Kumi. It is immediately adjoining tho Oakura Hotel, and wns in the occupation r>£ Mr. Grylls when the Onkuni Hotel was in his possession. When Mr, Grylls was leaving ho wqb told by tho natives that thoy intended to make
ÜBe of tho land themselves tlu\ season. In pursuance of this intention they entered upon tho section during last week, and have planted it with potatoes. It is suid that Tohu was at Minarapa's kaiangn^ last week, and askod the letter's permission to enter upon Rome land at Stony River leased by Minarapa to Mr. William Bayly. Minarapa, however, refuged to countenance tho trespass, telling the Parihaka chief to make use of his own land. A report pre railed in town to-day that the natives had also commenced ploughing on European land at Wailara, but this rumour proves to have been without any foundation whatever. It will be remembered that a month back wo gave currency to the report, which had its rise at Parihaka, that the natives were to ceuso their marching about, and to engage actively in extensive j cultivations. It would seem that this was a correct indication of tho native intention, for tho Maoris have already shown at various points along the coast that they intend to cultivate a, larger area of land this year than usual.
