WELLINGTON RACING CLUB'S STEEPLECHASES. [per united pbess association.] THIS DAY. This meeting came off to-day. Tho weather was fine, but the attendance was not large. Results to hand :—: — Tbial Steeplechase. Halciono ... ... ... ... ... 1 Mountaineer ... 2 Spartan ... ... ... ... ... 3 Secretary, Nikau and Old Sarah also ran. Slaughterman was scratched. Secretary •n aa a hot favorite. From a straggling start, Mountaineer led the field for the firdt round ; Secretary ran off after the first hurdle, and was never again in it. Passing the stand Mountaineer led, with Old Sarah second and Spartan third and NiUau last. At the hurdle past tbe stand Old Sarah fell, but was quickly remounted, but lost a lot of ground. On the second round Mountaineer led till two jumps from home, when joined by Halcione, and a grand race ensued, Halcione winning by threo lengths. Spartan the same distance away third. Time, omin. 23Jseca. Dividend, £6 13s. Handicap Hurdle 51 . Orient ... 1 Freebooter 2 Forest King 3 Conundrum, J L. Sullivan, and Pairicious alf-o ran. Victor, Okato, and Mountaineer were scratched. Conundrum and Sullivan led for three-quarters of a mile, nnd passing the stand for the first time were all together. Hounding the bottom turn the position varied, and Forest King assumed the lead, • with Sullivan second. At the obstacle at tho back of the course Patricioua fell Forest King was still in the lead, the others in v bunch. Coming to tho road Orient went up to the leadere, and the horses entered the straight bunched. In the race home all tha whips were out except on Orient, who won without an effort by a length, Forest King a fair third. Time, 4min. 16secs. Dividend, £1 193. Steeplechase.
