There appears to be a probability of the Owners of the Cape line of steamers running vessels to Is'ew Zealand ports Mr. James Ashbury has been negotiating in London for such a service, and in a letter to the Southland Freezing Meat Company he states that if support could be promised lie thinks he could arrange for two steamer?, of ten knots speed, to como from the Cape of Good Ilope.
Great excitement was caused in Cardiff: loot Saturday (wrote a London correspondent on April 30th) by the closing of the Savings Bank of tint town, in consequence of the discovery of extensive embezzle inents by the late actuary, Mr. Jas. E. Williams, who died in March. A partial examination of the books shows a deficit of £37,000, and tho defalcations appear to have been goinjj on for a period of thirty years. To tranquillise the depositors, who chiefly belong to the working classes, ihe trustees have announced that the principal part of the funds of the Bank, about £160,000, are safely sgcured in the hands of the Comptroller-General.
