SEPARATION OF TARANAKI AND

CLIFTON COUNTIES. The following is the report of tho Controller and Auditor-General(Mr. Fitzgerald) on the division of the existing assets and liabilities on the separation of tho Clifton County from the Taranaki County:— "la the matter of »n arbitration between th« Counties of Taranaki and Clifton, held at New Plymouth on the 27th day of June, 1885, under the provisions of the Counties Act, 1876, 1 award as follows:—

1. In respect of the assets and liabilities of the lato County of Taranaki, on the Ist day of February, 1885, when Clifton became a separate county, tho amounts whereof are agreed on by the representatives of the respective counties, and are set forth in the schedule A hereto, amounting to,— Assets, £3849 8s 8J; liabilities, £3492 03 6d. The County of Tarunuki shall take tho said assets, and bIwII pay the said liabilities and shall pay over to the County of Clifton the sum of £62 18s Id, being the Bhare of the credit balance of assets over liabilities divided in, the proportion of the rataablo property in each county, that is to say in tho pioportion of 82-4 to 176.

2. In respect of the assets let forth in the schedule B hereto, it is agree 1, and is hereby awarded that tho County of Taranaki shall take tho same at the values in the said schedule set forth, amounting to £481 16s, and in respect of the stone material for mending roads, set forth, in the schedule C hereto, of tho value of £230. The County of Clifton ahull take the same at such value, and tho County of Taranaki shall pay to the County of Clifton tho sum of £84 16s, being tho share of tho County of Clifton in the said sum of £481 16 j ; and the County of Clifton shall pay to the County of Taianaki the sum of £189 10i, being the share o£ the County of Taranaki in the said sum of £230; and this part of this award is made subject to the further agreement made between the two counties by which tho County of Taranaki undertakes, at such times as shall be agreed upon by the chairmen of tho respective counties, but before the end of tho ensuing summer, to break with tho Btono crusher, which by this awurJ becomes the property of the County of Turanaki, the stone material, so as to fit the same for road metal, which is now lying in the County of Clifton, and by this award becomes its property ; the County of Clifton paying to the County of Turanuki the sum of one shilling per cubic yard of the material so broken, the County of Turanuki paying the cost of the working of tho stone-cru&hcr, and the County of Clifton paying the coßt of removing tho said material to and from the same.

3. In respect of nino debenturus of tho late County of Taranttki for the sum of £75 each, held by the Government of New Zealand, and which aro severally payable one in eaoh year on tho Ist day of May, on und ufter the yeur 188G, the County oC Turanaki shall take up and pay such debentures as they full due, and tho County of Clifton shall, on or before tho Ist day of May in each year for nuc years on and from the year 1886, pay to the County of Turahaki tho sum of £13 45., being the share of the County of Clifton in the said 'sum of £75, divided in the proportion aforesaid ; and whereas it appears that tho sum of £750 was advanced by the Into county of Taranaki, prior to tho iirst day of February last, out of its general fund, to its account under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act, in anticipation of the sum of £1,500 agreed by tho Government to be advanced to the late County of Turanaki, by way of loan under the provisions of tho said Act, and which was payable before tho first day of February last, but has not yet been paid, and tho said £750 was expended by the late County of Tarunuki in tho manner and for the purposes for which tho said £1,500 wai agreed to be advanced by the Government under the provisions of the said Act, I hereby award that of tho said sum of £1,500 the sum of £1,236 is payable to the County of Taranaki, and the sum of £264 to the County of Clifton; of which Buniß of £1,236 and £264 respectively, the sums of £620 and £130 uro repayable by the said counties respectively to their general funds, in repayment of tho said advance of £750, which liiib been expended in anticipation of the said louu of 1 £1,500 from tho Government, prior to the severance of the two counties.
