COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Council met on Wednesday. Present Messrs. Elliot (Chairman), Brown, King Honey field, and Price. Financial Matters. — The Auditor-Gene-ral's report was received without comment. Radnor Hood. — In response to the ap plication of the Manganui Road Board, the Inspector is to go and look at Radno. road, and advise ns to metalling. Disputed Rates.— W. 6. Harvey wrote, re disputed rates, stating that the Council had no claim on nim, as his lease was dated Ist July, 1885, not Ist July, 1884. Credit Account.— The Under-Secretary for Public Works notified that now the financial matters of the counties had been settled the £750 due under the Roads and Bridges grant will be placed to credit. Red Tape.- -A new form of application for grants was transmitted to the Council, to bo used when asking for money. Hawera County. — It had been asked whether money had been paid to Hawera for the Stratford-Opunake Road without a poll being taken, the idea being that Taranaki was being treated differently The Public Works Department said that the Hawera County had contributed oH&oae fourth of the money for the road, anotliat a poll was therefore unnecessary. •New Ridings. — The Colonial Secretary wrote, stating that the Taranaki County could not be divided into fresh ridings. The reason given was that " The County of Clifton comprises what was a complete riding of the County of Taraaaki." Merely the representation of the remaining ridings can be altered. O.junaice. — The clerk of the Town Board of Opunako wrote, asking for the services of a Mr. McManus to advise them as to substituting open pitched stone channels for culverts. The secretary was instructed to reply that the Taranaki County had no such person in its employ. Unnecetsan/.— The Council thought it unnecessary to comply with the request of the Clifton County Council that a detailed account of the expenditure on the WaitaraMimi Road should be supplied to the Clifton County. Disputed Claim.— Mr. D. Berry gave notice that storage charges were accumulating on cement which he was to deliver on the sth April.— The Council decided they were not liable for storage under the terms of their agreement. Iron Box. — The Clifton County Council wrote saying they would be happy to pay railway charges to Waitara on an iron box and table which they understood the Tara ; naki County would give them. — It was decided that the Taranaki County wanted it themselves. Squabble. — Having seen personal matter in reference to himself in print, Mr. Jeffrey wrote explaining. — The letter wus received. Compensation. — A communication from the Rodney County re compensation paid for land taken for roads was received. — It was decided that the matter did not concern Taranaki, and that theicfore support could not be given.
