The s.s. Gairloch arrived at the breakwater this morning with a large mail and several passengers from Onehunga. After landing she cleared to Waitara. The Licensing Committee in Auckland have issued an edict that no accommodation shall be afforded the public by hotels after 10 o'clock. Auckland is getting to be a pleasant place to live in. Colonel Reader, Under-Secretary for Defence, has leceived six months' leave of absence, on the ground of ill-health, and j Major Gudgeon will act in Colonel Reader's absence. The vital statistics of the Borough of New Plymouth for the month of June are as follows: — Births, 20 ; deaths, 5 ; marriages, 9. The new fire-bell will be sounded tonight in two oi three parts of the town to ascertain which will be the best place to erect it. The Brigade desire us to announce this to avert alarm. In the Supreme Court at Auckland, on Wednesday, the power of the Licensing Committee .to cancel the Cosmopolitan Hotel license, on the general ground that the house was not required in the neighborhood, was challenged by on application to compel the Committee to hear evidence or grant the license. Judge Gillies, without calling on the other side for a reply, said it was clear that the Committee had the power, and he over-ruled the motion, with costs. The 8.8. Gairloch left the Onehunga wharf at 7 p.m., and the Oreti at 6.45 p.m., both for the breakwater. The Gairloch arrived alongside at 940 a.m., and the Oreti at 9.45 a.m., the Gairloch doing the run a few minutes quicker. At daybreak this morning they were both observea in the ofliing, and as they neared land speculation was rife among the spectatois as to which was ahead, but as they approached it was seen that, the Gairloch had a slight lead, and she berthed alongside about five minutes before her smaller antagonist. After landing passengers and mails the Gairloch proceeded to Waitara, and the Oreti to Wanganui. After having been in business over forty years, Mrs. M. Hood intends to retire, and announces elsewhere that she will clear the whole of her stock off at ridiculously low prices. Ladies will find in the millinery department everything necessary for the requirements of the present season, which are to be obtained at prices far below original cost. Mrs. lIooJ is doing so, as it is necessary the stock should be cleared off as speedily as possible. The sale is a genuine one, and we have no doubt the public will avail themselves of the bargains to be obtained. — [Advt.]
