HARBOUR DEFENCES. ■Wellington, October 4. Major Cantley, a Eoyal Engineer officer of high standing in the Engineers, has been specially selected to come to New Zealand in connection with some of tl:o harbour defences on account of his p^cnlar capabilities for the duty entrusted to him. He has been 2-i years in active service, and was employed tinder His Excellency Sir Win. Jervois on the defences of Cork harbour, subsequently at Gibraltar, and later still in reporting on the Falkland Islands, and their capabilities as a naval station, etc. He "was sent out at the request of Sir W. Jervois to assist His Excellency in respect of that executive work connected with designing a thorough system of defence. Major Cantley will act under His Excellency. KING OF HAWAII VISIT 3 NEW ZEALAND. The King of Hawaii having written to the Government intimating his wish to visit New Zealand next year, and asking if he would be received officially, the Ministers have replied, saying they will be glad if His Majesty will visit this Colony, and will accord him an official reception. He is not likely to leave Honolulu till after his Parliament meets next April. THE MAYOR3HIP OF WELLINGTON. Mr. Shaw has declined the requisition to stand as Mayor, owing to his professional and 1 arUamentary duties. ABRIVAL OF THE WESTPORT COLLIER. "Westport, October 4. The s.s. Korunui, from Glasgow and Cardiff, via Capetown, arrived to-day, with 20 passengers for Westport, Nelson, and Wellington. She also brings 87 tons of raisins from the Cape for Dunedin and Christchurch. On the voyage she steamed nine knots with the consumption of 6 tons in 24 hours. She will carry 520 tons on a draught of 12 feet. MAN DBOWNED IN LYTTELTON HARBOUR. Christchurch, October 5. Yesterday afternooon Hugh Minnis, carpenter of the s.s. Doric, was drowned in Lyttelton Harbour. He was one of a number of a crew of the steamer cruising round the harbour in one of the ship's boats. From some cause the boat turned over near a reef, and Minnis, who essayed to swim ashore, was drowned. The boat was under sail at the time, and was seen to go over. Help was not long in reaching the seven men who were clinging to her, and they were rescued. The body is not yet recovered. THE SALVATION ARMY DISTURBERS. Dunedin, October 4. In dismissing the charge of breach of the peace against a lad, Mr. "Watt, 8.M., said the Salvation Army by its processions and open air meetings invited assault. IHE GOVERNOR PASSES THE SUMMER IN DUNEDIN. Dunedin. October 5. It is stated that the Governor, Lady Jervois and family are likely to spend the summer months in Dunedin.
