CALENDER FOR OCTOBER, 1883.

The Taranaki Herald. PUBLISHED DAILY. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1883.

♦ Another section of the Breakwater was completed this afternoon. This is rapid progress, and shows that Mr. Rhind and men are in earnest in pushing on the work. The s.s. Oreti arrived in the roadstead last evening at about 6.30 from Wellington with a cargo of 500 casks of cement for the Harbour Board. She went alongside the breakwater at 9 a.m. to-day, and after discharging her cargo Bailed at noon for Wanganui and Greymouth. We are glad to hear from Dr. Leatbam that Mr. liobinson, who met with a severe accident at Manutahi a short time ago, by being dragged over a bush clearing by a rope attached to a horse, is still showing considerable improvement towards recovery. At a meeting o£ tbe Committee of tho Benevolent Society hold last evening, several new caseß of need were attended to. The Committee expressed a hope thut with the change of: the season the stock of cast oIT apparel, &c, would be replenished by the public kindly forwarding donations to the Committee. At a sitting of the District Court this morning Mr. Samuel applied for probate to be granted to Dr. H. B. Leatham and MrW. Black, executors under the will of the late Dr. Sinclair. The order was granted. Mr. Hutchison applied for an order declaring the deed of assignment in the estate of Charles Days, of Manaia, duly executed. Order granted accordingly. At tho meeting of the New Plymouth Women's Prayer Union, held yesterday, at 3 p.m., in the smaller Wesleyan Schoolroom, it was unanimously resolved to continue the meetings at the same time and place. The 4th October being the anniversary of the institution of the Union by Mrs. Hampson, arrangements will shortly be made for a commemorative tea meeting for the members. Woodyear's Electric Circus did not open last evening, but tho Company arrived in town. Their arrival, however, was teo late in the afternoon, and, although they made every exertion to keep faith with the public, nnd open as announced, Mr. \Voodyear found that it would be impossible to do so, and at tho aume time do his splendid troupo justice. A large concourso of peoplu assembled outside, and Mr. Woodyear addressed them, apologising for his inability to open the Circus lust night. He, however, ussured them his troupe would endeavour this evening to make amends for the disappointment that had been occasioned. Taranaki Advance. —One of the surest signs that Turanaki is going ahead is tho fact that our local tradespeople are beginning to import goods direct from tho London markets. Wo have just inspected a quantity of hair, tooth, and nail brushes of v quality superior to anything before seen in this district, which have just been lauded ex s.s. Doric, and which wero manufactured by Q. B. Kent & Co., of London, to tho express order of J. H. Bbnnkit & Co., of this town, which are now on view und for sale at "Tho Pharmacy," at prices which cannot fail to offect a speedy clearunco.—Adv. 1937 to
