MANUTAHI SOUTH.

[prom our own correspond bnt.] The annual sitting of the Otoia Licensing Committee was held at Kaknramea Tov.-n Hall on 7th June. Present : Mr. George Gane (chairman), Messrs. R. B. Pearce, Wilson, Brodie, and Clover. William Gallagher applied for a renewal of license for the Mr.nutahi Hotel. The police reports were goad, excepting n clause as follows :—": — " Reports have been made of the proprietor of the Manutahi Hotel being of a very passionate disposition. During the year a quarrel took place at tke hotel, where a native was supposed to have lost [ his life, for which the licensee was tried I and acquitted." After a few remarks from I the Chairman the license was granted. Daniel Hurley applied for an accommodation license for the Woodville Hotel, which was granted, the Chairman informing Mr. Hurley that the house would have to be kept up to the samo standard as a publican's license demands, which he promissd to do. James O'Sullivan applied for a renewal of the Kakaramea Hotel license. The pol'ce reports being good, it was also j granted. i The Bench ordered that the proprietors of hotels with upstairs apartments furnish before the next quarterly meeting rope ladders, so that in case of fire — the staircase being on fire — persons will be afforded means of escape. The applicants agreed it should be done. The Chairman informed the applicants that if it was not done it would be marked against their licenses. The clerk was instructed to write to the various chairmen, to the following effect, viz.: — "That this Committee requests the Government to appoint an analyst, and that a conference of chairmen of the various districts, viz., Manaia, Hawera (Road and Borough). Otoia, Patea Borough, and Waverley Districts he held at Patea to endorse the action taken by this Committee, as the Committee is of opinion that it would be beneficial to the whole district."
