OAKURA.

[FROM ODR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] June 12. — Last week the Omata Licensing Committee held their Court here, and of course a number of the publicans, together with t\\ o legal gentlemen, who were " representatives of the bar" in more senses than one, were present. The latter arrived in a buggy, and, after alighting, repaired to the hotel to obtain something to refresh themselves with after their drive, having had to face a cold south-easter. They had scarcely saluted host Grylls. when a voice outside was heard to cry out, " There goes the buggy." and round the corner of the hotel came the vehicle, without horse or driver, 1 and there it went at full speed across the road, and I believe was prepared to take tho ditch and bank fence, and make for the beach, if it had not been caught and brought back. I don't want you to believe that the buggy did all this of its own accord, for it was that vagabond -iEolus who was the bottom of it, and tried to do more mischief hut was prevented. An accident happened at Captain Mace's last week, nis horsos and buggy were standing outside his house whilst he was getting ready to go into town, and something frightened the horses, when they made for the gate, smashing it and leaving the buggy there, they got clear away. I bel : eve the pole and the under work of the buggy was broken and other damage done ; but fortunately no one was in the , vehicle at the time, so no one was hurt. I am glad our schoolmaster has thought better of his action with regard to the school-room. There was a dance in it on Friday, the 26th May, and I hear there is to be another one soon.
