SUPREME COURT.—Criminal Sessions.
MoNDiT, November 7.—Before His.Honor /j ..; Mr. Justice Gillies. His Honor took his seat upon the Bench at IP o'clock, when the following Grand Jury waß empanelled-.—George Cortis, J.P. (foreman), W. Shftttleworth, T. K. Skinner,' W. Cutfield, W/Bayly, P. Elliot, J. Rattenbury, P. C. Morton, W. Edinondson, W. Cottier, J. H. Good, J. £. Cutfield, A. C. Fookes, J. H. A. Lflell, t Kelly, ,J5. Humphries. His Honor, in addressing the Grand Jury, referred briefly to .the present'crisis in native affairs, and the e'xeit^niept occasioned T owing to so many armed ineri being in the district. He considered the action taken by the Goyernment to be the best that could have been adopted for the promotion of peace throughout the district, and'he hoped that the difficulty would \)e speedily settled. His Honor then briefly reviewed the cases to be tried, and pointed out to the Grand Jury the mo3t important points which required their chief consideration in finding true bills or otherwise. The Grand Jury then retired, and during the morning returned true bills against Thomas Campbeli foT horse stealing, and William Ri* Rose for stealing money. No bill was found. In the case of Corile v:Gibbons. Thomas &amsbcll^as charged with stealing a horse, the property of — Wilson, and pleaded guilty..' ' ' ," '. His' Honor sentenced the prisoner to eighteen months'.imprisonment with hard labour. * William ift&'i&w was charged with stealing eight one pound notes from James Clark, of Manaia. The prisoner, who was undefened, pleaded not guilty. Mr- Standish prosecuted on behalf of the Crown, and the following jury was empanelled : Joshua Jones (foreman), S. Mathews, J. Martin, R; Julian, J. Batten, J. Felling, J. Waite, D. McVicar, J. Mulree, J. Jury, W. W. Crozier. The following witnesses were examined :—: — James Clark, J. Donovan, Henry Gapper, W. Campbell, T. Lloyd, and J. Brown ; and the case was being proceeded with when we went to press.
