SPORTIN G.

THE WANGANUI HANDICAPPER.

At the annual meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club (says the Wanganui Herald), letters were read from the Canterbmy and Dunedin Jockey Clubs asking the Wanganui Club to co-operate in the selection of a Colonial Handicappcr, by sending two delegates to a meeting to be held in Christchurch. That, pending the said appointment, tho C.J.C. had appointed Mr. Griffiths as handicapper for the Autumn Meeting, and suggested that it might be found desirable to give Mr. Griffiths a trial for one year. Mr. F. It. JACKSON- said doubtless the proposal would meet with favour down south, but lie thought the Wanganui Club should retain the services of Mr. Hately. (Hear, hear.) They had had experience of Mr. Hatcly's handicapping, and knew that he could be depended upon for uprightness. lie (Mr. J.) would quote from a private letter he had received from Mr. Ilately referring to the proposal that had emanated from Canterbury. Mr. Hately wrote : "lam prepared to stick to the Wanganni Club so long as their interests and mine do not clash. When they do the Club shall receive ample notice." That being tho case, he (Mr. J.) was of opinion that Wauganui should decline to join the Southern Clubs. Dr. Earle did not think there was any occasion to go beyond Mr. Hately. His handicaps had always boon made honestly, and racing had given great satisfaction. Mr. Chubbin was satisfied that Mr. Hately was as good a handicapper as any in the Colony. The result of the races proved it. Mr. Betts sni 1 the Club had gone on improving very steadily, and really he could not see that any benefit would occur from changing the handicapper. Mr. Hately had had the experience of some years to assist him, and was thoroughly to be depended upon. Dr. Earle moved, " That a reply be sent to the Canterbury and Dunedin Jockey Clubs to the effect that the Wanganni Jockey Club have had every reason to be satisfied with their present haudicapper (Mr. Hately), and can see no reason for changing." Mr. Cross seconded the resolution, which wascarricl unanimously.
