THE CUSTOMS REVENUE.

[FROM THE "WELLINGTON POST."] It is understood that the Customs revenue for the half- year jast expired is about £19,000 in excess of the estimate for that period. Premising- that the returns of Customs revenue for the September quar ter are not yet published, bat the totals of all but three of the minor ports have been made tip (subject to correction), and the a^pregate arrived at, may be taken to be substantially correct, as the difference can scarcely be more than a hun. dred pounds one way or the other, it finds the total for the colony for the quarter to be £312,630 against £308,850 for the September quarter of 1879. This brings the total for the year ended 30th September, to £1,240,900 against £1,252,867 for the preceding twelvemonths ; £1 330,872 for the twelvemonths ended 30th September, 1878, and £1,204,807 for the similar period ended 30th September, 1877. Tn other words, the Customs revenue during this year of extreme commercial depression and reputed "bad times" has exceeded that of the prosperous year 1876-7, and only fell short by some £88,000 of the still more prosper, ous year 1877-8, and is within £10,900 of the year 1878-9. It is clear therefore that our Customs revenue keeps well up to the mark, and may bo relied on with safety to realize what i* expected and required of it. This should tend to reassure those timid people who have lately been sedulously endeavoring to create a panic in regard to the fiuancial condition of this colony, which, however alarming it undoubtedly was a year ago, appears now to have been effectually placed on a sound and satisfactory footing through a readjustment of taxation and rigorous retrenchment.
