LATE OUTRAGE AT THE UPPER THAMES.
[by tklkguaph.]
The Hauraki Nativo Council liavo delivered their decision. It is to tho effect that there must be no nioro .shooting, on a penalty of the offenders being handed over to the Supremo Court. The dispute between tho Ngatikoto and Ngatihako tribes as to tho ownership of the block of land on which the late outrage took place is to be tried in the Supreme Court immediately after the delivery of this judgment.
Mr. E. W. Puckey demanded tho surrender of the would-be assassin, but the runanga declared they had not the power to hand them over.
Nothing further can be done until fresh orders have been received from the Nativo Minister.
Major Withers and Sub-inspector Kenny are still at Pareora, but they are powerless to act without further, instructions.
Grahamstown, September 16. The judgment of tribes of the Haurald was most elaborate on justifying tho crime from a Maori point of view, but showing that tho peaco of Hauraki would bo at stake if tho offenders did not surrender to be tried by European law. A formal demand was mado for tho offenders and refused. Tho tribes then separated, but yesterday two of tho leading chiefs, Tukino and Pineha, talked over the matter, and arrivod at a conclusion to see that tho men were given up to European law. A pigeon message received at tho Advertiser office late last night says with the exception of Pineha, tho Ngatihakos left for their home at 7 o'olock on Saturday night. Sunday, September 14, 5 p.m. — The peoplo of the Thames will be glad to learn that wise counsels have prevailed since yesterday, and that within a week tho Police Court will be graced with tho presonco of Messrs. Buckley and "Webster. Through tho exertions of tho Government old Tukukino induced Pineha to remain behind for a day or two, for tho purpose of talking the matter over privately. They wero engaged all day in doing this, and the result has been that the road obstructionist has persuaded Pineha to allow Pakara and Epiha to be given over to justice, lest the peaco of the District should be disturbed, but it will be four or five days beforo the matter is finally settled. Wata Tipaau, a young chief at tho Miranda, and Tukukino will bring the culprits to justice.
