MR. WELLS DEFENDED.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, — I wns vory sorry to see n letter like that signed " Progress," which appeared in your issue of Saturday, because it was so ungouerous, and shows that the writer must havo some bitter personal feeling against Mr. Wells, or be would not attack him in tho manner he has done, Mr. Wells, it is well known, has for many years given tho whole of hia time to the public, and has done so without expecting either fee or reward for so doing. Why he should be picked out from the other members of tho Harbor Board to bo abused, I do not know ; but I am certain that whatever he had done has been done with tho vory best intentions and with a desire to benefit tho place, seeking no reward either in coin or thanks — feeling conscious that he has dono his duty, which is sufficient recompense for his labour. I don't know what " Progress " means by the "manipulation of public money," but Mr. Wells is abovo taking any pay for what ho does — it is the othor way, and he is never found a niggard when asked to contribute either to public or private subscriptions that may be raised. — I am, &0., Defensive.
