MEETING AT CARLYLE.
A public meeting called by placard on a few hours notice was held last night, (Thursday) nearly 150 being present. Mr. G. F. Sherwood was voted chairman, and the following resolutions were unanimously passed, (1) "That this meeting is of opinion that in consequence of the present attitude of the natives, it is urgently necessary that this district should immediately be put in a state of defence, and the Government be requested to at once forward a supply of arms and ammunition here, and be issued to the settlers when occasion requires." (2) '• That the settlers in the meeting feign their name, as being willing to form themselves into a corps for the local defence of Carlyle, and request to be armed and drilled at once."
A largo number of the audience at once signed as volunteers. A commander was appointed, and forwarded a resolution to the Government, and to ask further action as required by circumstance-!.
An irate correspondent with a short temper writes to the Wanganui Herald on the subicc! of Life Assurance. He wants to know why the peripatetic agents are not apprehended for gambling. He argues that as the "list men " on the racecourse were turned off by police so should Messrs. Short and' M'Mur lo be caufione-1 or taken into custody at once. The '• list men " offer, it may be 3 to 1 against a certain horse doing a certain thing, that is winning a race. The agents in question go to a man and say, in effect, we offer you so many pounds to one that you won't die before a certain time. The man becomes a particeps criminis by accepting the offer and depositing his money, and by keeping the bet alive by renewing the deposit quarterly or yearly, as arranged. If the man dies he wins the bet, and his survivors take the money ; if he lives to a good old age the Insurance Company win by receiving from the man more money than they guarautce to pay.
