One placed his hand in his pocket. The settler argues that he fancies tliey were robb3i\s going to draw a revolver, and lie at once chai'ged them, and being a man of muscle, soon put both bums Jtors do combat. He then securely tied their legs together, acquainted the police that his house and self had been attacked by robbers, and rode off to file his schedule. The story has cause. l much amusement. ■ It is stated that within the past four- or five weeks the merchants of this colony have countermanded by cable orders for 2A- million pounds worth of goo.ls, which had been sent to England and the Continent ■' by post. \ A great falling off in the Customs revenue for the first half of next year must therefore be -anticipated, and. the deficiency duly », provided against. > ' ' ■: The Avar is being waged conjointly, by. the Republics of Peru and Bolivia against Chili, and being hotly carried on. The first pitched naval battle between Chili aud Peru has. just taken place, and after a determiied contest the Chilians were victorious.
