Two rifle match yesterday terminated in favour of the Wiinjjanui men, who won by four points ; the Taranaki Riflos scoring* 535, and the Waiiiranni Rifles, 539 points. This is the~ first match for three years which the Wani^anui Rifles havo won from the volunteers here, they (the Wansfanui volunteers^ having beeu defeated on thres consecutive occasions. We congratulate them on their present victory, which we are informed hovvover, isowin^ to the fact that threo of the beat shots in the Taranaki toam absented themselves, and thoir places had to be supplied by "emergency men." The. three, gentlemen in question are SubLieut, fioskin (an ex-champion of the Colony), and Lieutenant Bllis, and Bandsman R. Hooker, both of them holders of several Government District Prizos. We understand that the absence of Lieutenant Rllis was the re<ult of a misunderstanding as. to the day. Subjoined are. tho scores of fcbe Taranaki team : —
