April 13. The agricultural statistics have been published for IS7;J. Tho total area under crop, including artificial grass, was 2G8,G57 acres, being an increase on last year of 41,177 acres; under grass, 254,560. At the nomination to-day for the election of a member for the Provincial Council for City East, Mr. W. L. Rees, barrister, and George Holdship, timber merchant, were the candidates. Recs said that his priuoipal object for wishing to get iuto the Council was that he might contest the General Assembly seat for the City East, with Julius Yogel at the next election. Show of hands, for Rees, 50 ; Holdship, 3S. April 14. From the fact of fowls dying in Auckland, it is believed that another epidemic is likely. At nomination for City East, for Council, yesterday, the show of hands was in favour of Rees. • The result of the poll for election of member for General Assembly for Auckland City West, is Dignan, 565 ; Dargaville, 386. The Civil Sittings of Supreme Court have been postponed till Wednesday. A shark, fourteen feet long, has been caught in the harbour. At Tauranga a severe shock of earthquake was felt to-day. From the Tairoa rush favourable reports have been received. The prospectors intend to test a ton of stuff and have applied for a water-right. They also intend taking up crushing machinery. April 15. A shareholder, iv to-day's Echo says— That the Taranaki Iron-sand Company is grossly mismanaged by the Wellington ring of'shareholders, and will have to pay dearly for the abortive undertaking. He says that the Secretary, who obtained office by toadying, is overpaid, and that tho whole affair will come to grief if the shareholders do not bestir themselves. Gramamstown, April 13. Thomas Williams was brought up on remand to-day, charged with shooting with attempt to murder John Loovey. Evidence was taken at length. Medical evidence was given to the effect that Loovey was suffering from shot wounds below the knees. The accused made a long statement admitting the offence. He said that prosecutor had three or four times seduced bis wife from home, aud disgraced both himself and his family, and rendered his life miserable, besides ruining his prospects. He had therefore determined to be revenged. HeYlid not intend to kill Toovey, but to cripple him. The accused was committed to trial. The survey of {he road from Shortland to Tairoa is to be undertaken at once.
