CANTERBURY.
A child, the dangbter of Mr. Thqmson, blacksmith, fell down a deep well at Lyttelton. The mother besought a man to rescue it, but he not responding quickly, sho seized the well rope and went down and was drawn np safe. The mother and child bad a narrow escape from drowning. The polling for the election of a member of the General Assembly for Akaroa resulted in the return of Mr. Montgomery. The votes recorded were as follows : — Montgomery, 168 ; Pilliet, 76. The offices of the Board of Education were broken into on Sunday, and £35 abstracted from the cash box. The circumstances of the robbery show that the thief must have been thoroughly conversant with the practice of the Board in money matters, and a knowledge where the money was kept.
