Tbe Mountain Road. — The Provincial Secretary in tho Council on Thursday last, in imswer lo tho question as to when tho Mountain Road was likely to be begun, said, — " That he believed there existed a diiforenoo of opinion jo the Cabinet with reference to the confiscated land* in this Province, and that as the qacstion would have to be submitted to the Assembly, the Pn - viucial Government could do uothiug till it obtained an answer from the General Government." The road therefore, we may presume, is not likely to bo commenced until after the winter has passed. The Rumoured Second attempt on Prince Alfred's Life. — We publish in our supplemeut a report stating that a man had been arrested on board tho " Galatea" under vory suspicious circumstances. We cat the extract from tho Nelson Colonist ; — the only copy wo bolieve that came from Nelson by the steamer, and which was brought by Mr. Houywill of Brougham street. We are, however, very much inclined to doubt the reliability of the report, as no mention is mudo of the circumstance in tho Sydnoy Morning Herald of the Ist inst., for had such an occurenco taken plaoo that journal would have been suro to have made sonio mention of it. ty Military Intelligence.— Wo gather the following intelligence, from the Auckland Evening Netos: — " Captaiu Young, of tho 18th ILL, is officiating as Aide-de-camp to his Excellency while in Auckland. The officers in command of the troops at the following named stations in tho Colonies are to be for tho future styled " Commandants," viz., New South Wales, Qaeeusland, South Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand It is rumoured in the baracks at Auckland, that | immediately after the arrival of General Chuto (now daily expected) another detachment of the 18th will proceed to Wanganui, and after some time the detachments at Wellington and Taranaki will be relieved by others from Head quarters in Auckland." Wo take tho following from the Malta, Times :—": — " Thomas Scotcher Nunn, Esq., has this day been promoted to tho rank of Chief Engineer in her Majesty's fleet for his gallant and humane conduct in April, 1864, during the war in Now Zealand." £ The Gaubison Theatke.-— Thiß Theatre will be opened on Monday and Tuesday evenings next, when the public will again have the pleasure of witnessing tho performance of the members of the Royal Garrick Club, assisted by several gentlemen amateurs. Tho pieces chosen for tbe first night's performance will be the " Dream at Sea," "The Stage Struck Hero," and the laughable farce of " B.B." On Tuesday night the farce of" B.B." will form tho interlude, and the evening's entertainment will conclude with "Villikins and his Dinah." Such attractive pieces, and the well-known ability of the Club, and the gentlemen amateurs cannot fail to attract a large audionce to witness the performances on both nights.
