THE SALE OF THE WAITARA LAND.

Tub Government land sale of the suburban allotments adjoining the Township of Raleigh (Waitara) took placo, as advertised, in tho Provincial Council Chamber on- Saturday last, the Commissioner of Crown Lands (J. Stephenson Smith, Esq.), acting as auctioneer. On the sale being opened, Mr. F. A. Carrington rose on behalf of parties in England — wards in Chancery — who owned the land to protest against the sale proceeding — His Honor the Superintendent objected to any interruption takiug place. He bad received his instructions, and the sale must proceed. Mr. F. A. Cahrington replied that as an agent for the parties in Eugland, who were warda in Chancery, he was there to protest against the sale proceeding nntil certain conditions wero complied with. He asked permission to read a letter he had sent to his Honor, and to make a few remarks to the meeting. He then read the following letter : — " New Plymouth, Taranaki, April 2, 1863. " SrR, — Seeing that the honorable the New Zealand Government have by Gazette notice and advertisements in the local papers determined on selling suburban allotments of land in the Waitara Township on the 4th instant, and perceiving that no mention is made for the holders of New Zealand Compauy'sland orders to bo allowed to select 37J acres of the said suburban land for each 50 aero land order "in priority to general purchasers," as' was agreed-between the honorable tho New Zealand Government and myself , on the 2nd August, 1858, and afterwards ratified by tho passing of clause 8 of "The Land Orders and Scrip Act, - 1855," (the faithful observanco of which was to satisfy the claims of myself and othor individuals to certain surveyed, selected, registered, and paid for sections of land in tho Waitara and Waiongana Distriots) and moreover observing tbat the honorable tho New Zealand Government have not borne in mind the official letter addressed to mo on the sth September, 18G6, and reiterated on tho 22nd December, 1866, to this effect — " You agreed to the principle of " The Land Orders and Scrip/ Acff' 1858," and the land to which you are entitled can be given to you in accordance with that Act." I, now therefore do myself the honor of calling your attention to this important matter, and as you are the Agent of the New Zealand Government for this Province, I beg leave to ask you if I may be allowed to select 37 J acres of suburban land in the Waitara Township, " in priority to general purchasers" for each 50 acre New Zealand Company's Land Order which 1 hold, as was agreed to on tho 2nd August, 1858, between the honorable the New Zealand Government and myself, and afterwards ratified by " The Land Orders and Scrip Act, 1858," and further verified by the Honorable the Colonial Secretary's letters addressed to me on the sth September, 1866, and 22nd December, 1866. , "I have the honor, &c, " Fred. A. Carrington." " H. R. Richmond, Esq., " Agent for the New Zealand Government, " For the Province of Taranaki, " New Plymouth." Mr. F. A. Carrington then asked His Honor if he might be allowed to select '67i acres of the suburban land which they were about to sell, for each fifty acres New Zealand Company land order which he held. His Honor : I have received no instructions for you to do so, and therefore the sale must proceed. Mr. F. A.. Caurington then told the meeting that that land on the West Bank of the Waitara whioh the New Zealand Government were about to sell belonged to him, to a ward in Chancery ' and other proprietors whose interest ho was here to represent, and he protested against the sale. Mr. Carrington then handed a copy of the letter and the protest to the Commissioner of Crown Lands and the sale proceeded.
