ADDRESS TO THE QUEEN AND DUKE OF EDINBURGH.
The following nro oopies of the addresses of condolence to His Royal Highness the Duke of 'Edinburgh";" and "Her "Majesty, as "drawn up by the Committee appointed at tho publio meeting on Friday week, and were forwarded by the mail which left here on Thursday last : — TO HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE DUKE OP EDINBURGH, &C. May it please your Royal Highness, — We, the inhabitants of the Province of Taranaki, New Zealand, in public meeting assembled, deBi ro to express our profound indignation at the horrible attempt which has been made to assassi- , nate your Royal Highness, aud our sincere Chunk-, fulness that the assassin failed in his object, aud that-' your Royal Highness is in a fair way of recovery. We beg to assure, your Royal' Highness of the deep sympathy whioh we leel for you, in the trying oiroumstances in which' you are placed, by the existence of a murderous conspiracy, to whioh the attempt upon your life must bo attributed. Being a small and impoverished community, we had not considered oarselvos to be in a position to entertain your Royal Highness in a suitable manner, but should your Royal Highness now decide ou visiting New Zealand, the settlers in this Province ti-usc that you will afford f.heru the opportunity of manifesting ro you .personally their sympathy and attachment. TO HER MOST "GRACIOUS MAJESTY QUEEN VICTORIA, QUEEN OF GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND,. &C. May it please your Majesty, — We, the inhabitants of tho Province of Taranaki, New Zealand, in public meeting assembled, desi ro most humbly to approach your most gracious Majosty -with au expression of our loyafty aud devotion to your Majesty, aud of our deep sympathy under jdhe trial to whioh your Majesty has boeu subjected, through the dastardly attempt to assassinate His Royal Highuess the Duke of Ediu burgh. It is our earnest hope that His Royal Highness may yet visit New Zealand, and that we may thereby be enabled to express personally to His "Royal Highness our deep devotion to your Majesty, and other members of the Royal family, and our detestation of the atrocious crime, the desigu of which, by God's mercy, has boon happily frustrated.
