RUMOURED CAPTURE OF KEREOPA.
By the schooner 'Tawera/ from the East Coast, intelligence has been brought to Tiwai that Kereopa, on his return from Poverty Bay. to OpotiKi, was there seized by the natives, by whom he has been bound Tiwai, with great promptitude, wrote down to his own people, inquiring the truth of the matter., and asking whether they con* sented that he should go down to Opotiki and bring Kereopa up to Auckland to take his trial. On the receipt of a letter in reply, giving him permission to do so, Tiwai proposes setting off and apprehending the rirardjerer. The report of the capture of Kereopa rests, as yet, entirely upon native authority but we must recollect that, as we have no direct communication with Opitiki, it could have reached us in no other way. The ' Tawera' called at Kawakawa, where tho news had been received from Opotiki. We may add that Tiwai docs not place entire reliance on the rumour : but his prompt action, on the vague report, is very creditable to him. Tiwai has already done good service to tho Europeans, and the capture of Kereopa would entitle him to their \apting gratitude.. As it is, he has been left comparatively unprovided for since he came to Auckland. We have opened a subscription list for him at our publishing, office, and as only a small sum is required to meet his personal wants, trifling contributions, if numerous, will be ample for tho pnrposo.~D<7% Southern.
