Local Intelligence.

The Superintendence— lt will be seen that the present Superintendent Mr. Charles Brown "has announced his intention of not coming forward again for re-election. There is therefore an opening for any man who feels he is able to get the Province out of a mess ; whoever he may be he will havo no easy and no very enviable task before him. To do the work- successfully will require a combination of' qualities — of prudence, energy, and administrative ability, whioh it may safely be said not many men in the place possess.

The Expedition to Auckland.— The men who were toJkeu on to Auckland in the Phoebe instead of being landed at the White Cliffs, complain of tho treatment they'received from Colonel Mulock in not being alloYed to land at; Onehunga. It was bad enough" for them not to be landed at their destination, and to receive inseadadeck passage to Auckland on a stormy night, but to be rofused permission to land at Onchnnga, and to be confined to the vessel in harbour for two days and nights, is a piece of military tyranny which is not likely wo should hope to be repeated. Cavalby Skirmish. — A skirmish between the enemy's cavalry and our Mounted Corps occurred on Thursday in the advance, on Warea, though it was more properly a chase than a skirmish, as the enemy (about fifteen) retired precipitately as soon as seen, and were followed at full speed for three or four miles by our men, who gave them an occasional revolver shot, but without effect, the pace and the ground being unfavorable to accuracy. Tub late Burglary At thb residence of Mr. W. Humphries.— Up to the time of our going to press the man Riley, for whom a warrant was issued ou the 19th instant had not been arrested. On one occasion during thef week the police came upon him within a distance of 36 yards. He however dodged them through a furze bush and escaped. This was within two miles of town. He ia still doubtless lurking in the suburbs, unless he has started for Wanganui aa he said he would; it ia* known that ho is armed with a revolver.

AcKNowLiDGMENTS.~W.e are under obligations to Captain Scott and Purser White of the Phoebe ; Capt. Mnndle of theEangaiiri, Capt. Thompson, of the Wonga Wonga, and Capt. Linklator of -the Wanganui, for their courtesy in furnishing our reporter with late-papers and news . Found Drowned. — A Military "Settler of thename of Benson, belonging to No. 2' Company, stationed at Poutoko being missed from camp on. Thursday last, some of hia comrades proceeded in search to the sea beach, it having been noticed that he had gone in that direction. His clothes being found, the supposition waa that he had been drowned in bathing, and yeßterday morning the body vras discovered. It was brought into town aud an inquest held on it during the afternoon, when a verdiot of " accidental death." was recorded.
