GREAT INTERNATIONAL HAMMERTHROWING MATCH FOR £50.
On Wednesday, John Tait, ot'Le^manhngow, and Thomas Bice/of Guelph, County .Wellington, Cana \a West, met' at the St< nefleld Recreation Grounds South Wellington Street, tp compete with the hammer, for £25 a side, and the championship of Scotland — ten throws each. The articles stated that the hammer would require to be lllbs., handles (stiff ash) 4 feet in length, that itßhould be thrown with the awing, four turns allowed with each delivery, and that a throw be made every five minutes. Accordingly, uhortly after three o'clock the men stood prepared to deliver, and Mr. Tait stepped forward and made the first throw. The following will show the respective throws :—
It will be seen from the above that Mr. Tait proved the winner, having thrown 8 -feet 6 inches further than his opponent. Betting, £12 to £8 on Bice till after Tait'e Bth throw, when long odds wero wanted for tho Canadian.
