(from our own correspondent.) NARROW ESCAPE FROM DROWNING.—DEPARTURE OF THE HON. JULIUS VOGEL.—THE AUCKLAND BAND. —NON-ARRIVAL OE THE NEBRASKA. Auckland, 8 p.m. There is no sign of the mailship Nebraska. Great anxiety is felt about her safety, but with little ground, as she may have deen detained at Honolulu. la the event of her non-arrival in time, it is said that arrangements will be made to have the City of Adelaide here to take up the San Francisco mail on the Nebraska’s date of sailing. The value of tlie cargo of the Caducous is estimated at £16,465. A lad, who lias been missing since last Saturday, was found drowned near the Watermen’s Steps, this afternoon. The police have been looking for him, as lie was supposed to have run away from home. He is the son of Mr Webb, painter. An inquest will be held to-morrow.
This morning, the signalman at the North Shore ran up tlie signals for tlie San Francisco mail steamer outside Tiri. They wc.te kept flying for about half an hour, when they were suddenly hauled down. Immediately on the signals being run up, a telegram was sent to Oneliunga, to stop the Taranaki, then leaving for Southern ports. The steamer had, however, luckily got some four miles down the Manukau before the telegram arrived, as it afterwards proved that the mail signal was incorrect. How the error occurred it is hard to say.
Tlicßangatira from Napier, via Poverty Bay. arrived in harbour this morning, bringing a cargo of wool for transhipment to tlie ship Caducous for London and a number of sheep. Capt. Renner reports having left Napier on the sth at 3 p.m., with strong south east w nds, and a very heavy sea passing Portland Island, which continued as far as the East Cane, thence light variable winds and fine weather. The s.s. Taranaki took her departure from the Manukau this morning with a large number of passengers, amongst whom was the Hon. Julius Vogel. A man whose name we are unable to learn had a narrow escape from drowning this morning. It appears that the man, who was the worse lor h’quor at tlie time, got under the Wharf near the waterman’s house, and in some way got jammed between two beams. When discovered the tide had risen up above the man’s breast. The Caducous sails for London at da\liglit to-morrow. Departures : W. C. Wentworth, barque, for Newcastle; William Ackers, barque, for Newcastle. Over £BO has been subscribed towards forming the Artillery Band into an Auckland City Band.
