WINCHESTER SCHOOL.

PRIZE DISTRIBUTION.

The annual prize-giving took place at the Winchester School on Wednesday afternoon, in . the presence of a large gathering of parents and friends. Mr T. H. Langford, chairman of the School Committee, presided,- and - the prizes were presented by Mr R. Maddren. Besides the class prizes, the following special awards were made: — Sewing (trophies presented .by Mesdames Austin, McFarlane, Burhorough, J. White and J. L. White) —Std. V., Mary Horgan and Margaret Austin. Std. IV., Annie Kernohan. Std. 111., Joyce Gudsell. Std. 11., Rainie Kernohan. Std. 1., June Gudsell

Forestry and school gardening.— James Scott.

Dood attendance. —Mary White (seven years’ perfect attendance), Iris Tregenza (four - years), Mar j garet Kernohan, Rainie Kernohan,. Annie Kernohan, Doreen , Philp, Willie Hawke (three years), Dora Deßenzy (two years), Patricia De Renzy, Maurice Keeley, David Kernohan and Raymond McCaughan (one year). The last-named received the headmaster’s prize for the youngest pupil qualifying for a good attendance certificate. Swimming certificates (learners) —Flora White, Mary Austin, Mary White, Betty Austin. Young Helpers’ League awards. — Badges: Flora White, June Gudsell, Harold Langford; (silver knife): Harold South.

Proficiency certificates. —Iris Tregenza, Patricia Deßenzy, Willie Hawke.

The committee presented every pupil in the school with a book prize, and also gave a book to each child under school age. Hearty votes of thanks were passed to the teaching staff for the care and success with which they had carried out their duties during the year; and to the committee for the splendid prizes they had provided; also to the donors of special prizes. Mr White responded on behalf of the staff, remarking that where such a good understanding existed between committee, teachers and parents, the work was always a pleasure, A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Maddren for presenting the prizes. The annual picnic was held at Caroline Bay on Thursday, where, in spite of occasional showers, the picnickers contrived to spend a happy day.
