CONCERT AND PRIZE-GIVING.

After an interval of several years the children attending the Temuka District High School gave a concert in the Dominion Theatre last evening, and despite the wet weather, the theatre was crowded in every part. The audience was as enthusiastic as it was large, and as the children gave their items they were rewarded by of applause. After the concert, the school, Navy League, R.S.A., and manual work prizes, and the' dux medals were presented. The Mayor (Mr T. E. Gunnion), Mr T. D. Burnett (member for the district), Mr J. Maze, and Mr Bremner gave addresses, and a very successful and enjoyable function was concluded at 11 o’clock. The prize list appeared in last issue, and the report of last night’s proceedings will be given in next issue'; AFTERNOON’S PROCEEDINGS. During the afternoon, at the school, the prizes were presented to the children attending the classes ' up to and including standard three, and also to the boys attending the Watt-Lowry School. This pleasant little ceremony was performed by the Mayoress (Mrs T. E. Gunnion) and there were also present the chairman of the School Committee (Mr A. E, Smith), Mr C. L. Fraser (member of the committee), StaffCaptain T. E. Holmes, and the teachers. When the Watt-Lowry School boys came forward to receive their, prizes, they rendered a song very nicely. At the end of the prize-giving, the chairman wished the children and teachers the compliments of the season, and called for the cheers of the children for the teachers, and these wbre given lustily.. Afterwards he extended an Invitation to the adults present to visit the open-air school and examine the sewing which had been performed by the school children. A vote of thanks to-the Mayoress was carried by acclamation, after which those present availed themselves of the chairman’s invitation, and it may be said that the children’s needlework drew forth many remarks of praise.
