THE USE OF STREETS.

To the Editor. Sir, —Some few weeks ago our City Fathers went to the expense of erecting and painting hoardings— -one. for each end of the town—inviting the travelling public to see our beautiful Domain, etc. Again, on Saturday last the people of the town and district met for the purpose of declaring open a public library and reading room, of which any town should 'be proud. Yet while all this goes on »ud we read “ Progressive Temuka ” news the same old City Fathers, for the princely sum of £2, sell certain streets to certain ratepayers to graze their cows on. Does this seem consistent or reasonable to the rest of the" people of the borough ? I would ask how much longer is this kind of hole and corner business going to continue, and when do our City Fathers intend giving all ratepayers in the Borough the free right, which is their own, to use all cr any of the streets as they, wish ? I am, etc., RATEPAYER Note.—Upon inquiring into the subject of the above letter, we learn that streets may not be let for grazing, but a blind street may bo’ fenced off, and used for such’a purpose, " If our correspondent i refers to a blind street fenced off,, and we know of no other of which he could complain, then he has the remedy in his own hands, for a requisition signed by six ratepayers to the effect that such fencing off was a nuisance and an inconvenience,, would cause the fencing to be removed.-—Editor.
