THE MILFORD LAGOON.
To the Editor
Sir,—ln your last issue I notice* that the Geraldine County Council has deoided not to assist'with "the protective works at the Milford Lagoon. .Your, readers will, nc doubt, remember the promise made by the Council at a previous meeting, that if the hut-holders and the residents got to work themselves, then the Council would assist, Now," I appeal to your numerous readers to take up this matter. The hutholders, residents and Mdliford Lagoon Association have pulled together and put up £3OO for the protection of the road and the public property. The result of their work can be see by anyone who likes to go down to the Lagoon, and so far I have heard nothing but praise for the good work that has been done. Money and assistance are urgently needed, and as the committee responsible for the worji have been depending on assistance from theCouhcil towards the protection of the road, it does not seem fair that 'they should be turned down likethis. Trusting that some abler pen than mine will take the matter up. —'l am, etc., ''SUPPORTER."' Temuka, 9th February. - v [NOTE,— On going through our files we can find no definite promise from the Council to give assistance in this matter. Our correspondent no doubt refers to. the report of the January meeting, which contains the following in reference to the matter:—"The chairman, stated at Milford Lagoon the water had cut away the bank badly during a flood, and Mr Bremner had put Mr Mur-' ray and men on and had stopped the scour to some extent, dr. Guild sadd that the work done at Milford a year ago was absolutely wasted.Could they have the advice, of the engineer as to how to go about the work now being put in hand? The chairman said he thought they might give some help in this man-, 1 ner, but the settlers must be prepared to help themselves. Cr. Ellis said .he "would be quite willing to: give them some help in this way." In the report of the last Council meeting published in our last issue; is the following:—"The Council agreed that it had ,no funds to spend on the works aisked for, and suggested that the Milford settlers form themselves into a special, rating area."—Editor.]
