Yesterday morning a fire broke out in a cottage in Fairlie, owned by Mrs Goodwin and occupied by Mr G. Adams. The occupant was in the- house by himself,-, his- wife, and family being away on holidays. He was awakened by hearing a picture Calling, and on opening the door was met with a sheet of flame. He got out of the house, and gave the alarm. The Fire Brigade was quickly on the scene, and with a good pressure of water from the new motor fire engine, soon had the fire under control. This fire fully ■ demonstrated what the engine can do. On the arrival of the brigade the task of putting out the fire seemed hopeless, the inside of the building being a mass of flames. Charles Clifford Arthur Capp fell into the rough sea near the Seatouu wharf (Wellington) on Sunday night, and it being very dark at the time, was ‘lost sight of. At Gisborne, a. small boy, George Spill, was drowned' on Sunday afternoon in the Waimata river, and a boy Fitzgerald was drowned in the river at Qliingaiti bn Saturday.
