MEETING OF COMMITTEE

The monthly meeting of the Geraldine District High School Coni’ mittee was held at the Bank of New Zealand on Friday evening- Present; Messrs A. M. Fyfe (chairman) J. D. McKechnie, M. G. Williams, F. Wallach, Dr. G. W. Curtis, G. H. Patrick, D. Hatton and E. White. Mr H. Cowie sent an apology. Correspondence was read from the Railway Department in regard to terms for a special train for the school picnic. Mr McKechnie reported having made arrangements with carriers for the conveyance of adults and children- from Geraldine to Orari and return, and it was estimated that the cost of transport by lorry and train would be approximately £62, and it was decided to make a canvass of the town and district for funds to defray this. It was decided to engage Mr Bryant to cater for the picnic, hot water and milk to bs provided free, and refreshments to be provided free for the children. Lorries will leave the school for Orari at an hour to be fixed when definite arrangements have been made as to the starting time o;f the special train from Orari. HEADMASTER’S REPORT.

The headmaster (Mr F. Piper) reported that the school had re-opened on February 1 with an attendance of 243 in the primary, and- 72 in the secondary department. The numbers on the roll at present were 260 primary, and 81 secondary. Mr Piper supplied the following figures regarding the picnic:—Number of children going by lorry and train 220, by train only 20, driving with parents 40, parents and friends going by lorry and train 86, by train only 9; a total of 37fi.

The report was adopted, satisfaction being expressed at the record number o,f pupils on the roll in the secondary, department, showing an increase 6£ several pupils over the previous highest number of 73. It was decided to ask Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., to be present at the picnic, and to ask him to receive a deputation from the committee in regard to the provision of a new building for a Junior High School at Geraldine. VISITORS’ REPORT.

Mr HattoiV'Oii behalf of the visiting committee, reported that he and Dr. Curtis had had a look round the outside of the school and the Qntbuildings. The bicycle shed was in a very bad state, and some repairs to the asphalt were required.

Mr Williams said that, he had reported that the 'aSphalt required tepairing at the last meeting, before the holidays, and it had been decided to ask the Borough Council to do the work.

Mr White stated that the Co unci' had- decided not to do this kind o: outside work.

The matter of repairs and the provision of a -tap was left in the hands of the chairman and Mr McKechnie, with power to act, and Mr Patrick was authorised to have the school hedges cut.

Messrs A. M. Fyfe and Mr McKechnie were appointed a visiting committee for the month. 'Accounts amounting to £l3 8s 9d were passed for payment.
