GERALDINE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Geraldine Borough Council was held on Tuesday. Present: His Worship the Mayor .(Mr J. Kennedy), and Councillors D. Paterson, E. H. Logan, A, J. Bell, E. White, M. Campbell and W. Davison. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr E. H. Logan applied for his lease of section of three acres - to be transferred to Mr Glasson.— Granted. Messrs Bennett Bros, applied for permission to put up a Plume petrol pump outside their premises.— Granted. Mr F. Trott was granted permission to rebuild the C.F.C.A., and to close the footpath' in front during the erection of the front wall. A Wellington firm wrote offeringmoney at 6 per cent, to local bodies. —lt was decided to write and ask if they would provide funds for a drainage loan. In reply to a letter from the Chief Inspector of Health, who wrote authorising the discharge of household drainage into the channels provided they were continuously flushed with water, the clerk was instructed to state that the Borough did not favour the scheme. Mr Glasson applied for the drainage from Mr Bruce’s house to be piped across his lease. At present it wag discharged on to the paddock. Cr. Campbell asked what would happen when the road was formed. The pipes might be put down ten feet and yet be in the way. The Mayor said it must be a matter of arrangement. The drainage might be disposed of on Mr Bruce’s own section. The matter would have to be tackled some time, if the ratepayers authorised a drainage scheme. Cr. Campbell said if they piped the drainage into the gully, those below would object. The master should be settled above. Cr. Paterson moved that Glasson be written to asking him to confer with Mr Bruce .and the Public Health •in regard to the matter. This was agreed to.. Mr J. Cairns, hon. secretary of the Band, wrote asking the Council’s permission to hold a sacred concert in the Town Hall on Sunday evening.—Granted. Mr McKay, director of the Technical School, notified that classes had been started in typing, motor engineering, and first aid with a roll number of sixteen. He trusted that the Council would /materially assist the Technical Board with its finances.

Cr. Campbell reported that he had visited the school on July 29, and on that day there was not a single class in existence. These classes were supposed to be winter classes, and would not be of much use if not started by the first week in August. At present there were three classes —one for first aid with 15, one for typing with 9, and one for motor engineering with 9. He recommended that the Council did not see its way to make a grant. Cr, Paterson said they should encourage them by giving a small grant. The classes before were stopped for want of funds, and an endeavour was now being made to help to get them started again. He moved that -they make a grant of £5.

Cr. Logan seconded. Cr. Campbell moved an amendment that they vote £1 Is, but found no seconder, and the grant of £5 was carried.

The Hawera Borough Council wrote asking the Council to support a resolution they had passed protesting against the proposed Town ‘Planning Bill in its present form. — Received. Mr C. O’Brien' tendered £5 for a stack of hay nearest the Park, and Mr R. P. Craig offered £25 for the four stacks of hay. Mr Knight tendered for two at £4 and one at £2. Mr Craig’s tender was accepted. The pounclkeeper (Mr F. Gaby) reported having impounded three horses and two cows during the month.

The Town Clerk said he could get a man to take on the job of poundkeeper, but the trouble was that the pound did not belong to the Borough;

Cr. Paterson said there had been a lot of cattle on the streets during the month. The Mayor said they could probably arrange matters with the County Council. It was agreed that the Town Clerk see what arrangements could be made, LIBRARY REPORT.

Miss Stringer, librarian, reported that 50b books had been issued during the month, A parcel of hooks from England had arrived and had been marked and placed on the shelves. £1 15s 9<l had been taken in subscriptions and fines, and two new members had joined. ■ The report was adopted. TOWN HALL REPORT. Mr C. C. Knight, manager of the Town Hall, reported that he had screened eleven pictures during the month, and had lettings on three nights, the attendances being materially affected by cold weather. He intended to screen three special pictures during Anniversary week. Seats would be reserved for Councillors. For the next mouth a number of lettings were on hand, ami with the advent of warm weather business should improve. Returns from pictures had been £Bo, lettings

£lO 17s 6d, total £93 17s 6d. Expenses had been £79 12s lid, leaving a profit of £l4 4s 7d. The report was adopted. FINANCE REPORT. , I Cr. Paterson presented the Fin-,. 1 ance report, which showed £l3l 15s 3d; dr. balance at £571 11s sd; accounts for payment £362 7s lid, leaving a total deficiency of £933 19s 4d. The Domain Board Account showed a credit of £‘3 9g 7d. domain board. The Council sat as a Domain Board, the same members being present. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr G. Loach, hon. secretary of the Geraldine Bowling Club, applied for the services of the Domain caretaker on the same terms as last year.—Granted. Mr E. Watt, hon. secretary of the Hockey Club, asked permission to break up ground at the back of the pavilion to improve the same foi > play next season. —Granted. The chairman’s action in authorising the erection of electric -light poles in the Domain was confirmed. THE SHELTER BELT. TO THE NATURAL BUSH. The question of cutting out trees in the shelter belt of the Bush as indicated in the Overseer’s report, was discussed. The Overseer stated that many of the trees which in his opinion should come out, were misshapen ones, and others would have to be very carefully felled in order to obviate the damaging of good | trees. Dr. Paterson moved that the work be gone on with, and it was decided that the work he supervised \ by Mr Campbell and Mr Coombes. It was the opinion of members that the posts and firewood should pay for the labour' of taking the trees out, hut not to defray the cost of fencing.
