LIFE SAVING SCOUTS
FIRST TEMUKA TROOP. The Life Saving Scouts have already been inaugurated in no less than eighty-one countries and colonies of the world# This organisation is run* on ■similar lines to the Dominion Scouts', but is controlled by the Salvation Army authorities. Several troops have been formed in New Zealand, but Temuka will have the honour of being the firsit troop in South Canterbury. Captain Bartlett, the energetic locpl officer of the Salvation Army, has gathered together thirty-six boys between the ages of-11 and 18 to commence the troop, and Mr N. Watt is appointed Scoutmaster. This movement is strictly undenominational, the only condition being /(hat the members shall attend a Sunday School or Bible Class. All the boys are very enthusiastic,, and the movement should do much for the youth of Temuka. They will learn invaluable lessons of loyalty, discipline and courage. A splendid opportunity is afforded them to develop their bodily strength, sharpen their wits, and fitting them generally for a career of usefulness and service. The Scout declaration is fourfold, namely, the isalvation of soul, mind, body and others. Membership is open to all boys over ten years of age.
Oh Monday next, at the Salvation Army Hall, which is kindly loaned to the' boys for their parades, there will be a public-.inauguration ceremony. The citizens arc invited to be present, and in a practical way show their interest and sympathy in this splendid movement.
