GRAND BAZAAR.

1.0.0. F. ALEXANDROVNA LODGE.

A GREAT SUCCESS

The grand bazaar held on Wednesday and Thursday at the Drill Hall, under the auspices of the Oddfellows' Lodge, was a great success, chiefly due to the painstaking manner in which the organisation was controlled by the president, Mr J. K. Young, and the honorary secretary, Mr W. Willett. ; ( , iStormy weather conditions militated against a large attendance on the first evening; when the opening ceremony was performed by His . . Worship the Mayor, Mr G. B. Cart- „. wright. Mr Cartwright, in his usual ~ happy style, expressed his pleasure in having the honour of opening the bazaar, and his admiration of the fine display of goods in the hall, which; were useful and necessary for everyday life. He said the bazaar was held to bring in funds for the Oddfellows' 'Lodge, which was a, great asset to Temuka and to the community, and referred to the part the lodge took in the social life of the town, instancing as an example the running of an excursion train to the Exhibition for the benefit d ■ . r the townspeople. It was quite odd for the Oddfellows to have bad weather for their "functions, but a !. bad start generally meant a good finish, and he hoped the bazaar would be a, great, success in every way. The speaker made a complin mentary reference to the friendly delations that existed between the Friendly Societies of Temuka, and * ! said he hoped the support given to the bazaar would be the means of helping to clear off the debt on the Oddfellows' Social Hall. The; hall contained numerous, stalls, attractively decorated with holly sprays and multi-coloured streamers, and the several displays were tempting enough to induce a liberal patronage. A full measure of praise is due to the ladies' committee for their efforts in connection with the stalls, which were under the charge of the following ladies:—Fancy work stall, Mesdames J. K. Young, Davis, Woodham and Miss Fisher.; sweets stall. Mesdames Bingley and ; Payn, and Misses Bryan and "Ives; soft drinks, ~ Mrs Ander&on, assisted by Messrs ~ Seeler and A. Smith; surprise i packets, Miss N. Wallace and. M. ' Scott; cake stall and refreshments, Mesdames Scott and Luderman. The, produce stall and weight guessing was under the control of Mr Jas. , King. The side shows did a great ■trade, the exhortations of Peanut Joe OMr Jas. Davis) filling his coffers, but at the same time ? being ruinous to his voice. "Mr R. Woodham was also much in evidence, and. the hoop-la kept. Mr Gaby and Mr Goodeve busy attending ' to the wants of the crowd.

The weight guessing competition was won by Mr T. Anderson, his guess being 571bs (correct weight, 56Jibs), and Messrs J. Freddy, W. Gaby and G. Clements tied for second place with 57|lbs. The nail driving was won by Mrs Swap 1, Mrs Tarbotton 2; and the ha,t trimming Mr F. Tarbotton 1 and T. Daily 2. On Wednesday niglit Mr Hartley Hope gave a good conjuring item, and on Thursday, Miss Jessie Somerville, of GeraltSipie, contributed a couple of pleasing songs, and Miss S. Dunn a recitation. The Teinuka Pipe Band, under DrumHMajor J. Edgar, enlivened the ...proceedings with selections, earning much praise for their services- .at the function, and the secretary, Mr Willed, came in for many flattering remarks for the untiring energy and thought ha had devoted fro directing affairs. At the conclusion everything unsold was disposed "of by Mr A. H. Fenn in his usual brisk manner, the total proceeds of the bazaar amount--ih'gto the vicinity of £IOO.
