QUEENSLAND LEAGUE TEAM v ALL BLACKS.

SECRETARY’S STATEMENT AT TIMARU.

There was a fair attendance at the Lyceum Theatre, • Timaru, on Thursday evening, when addresses on Rugby League football were given by Messrs H. Sunderland (secretary Queensland Rugby League) and J. Doyle (joint manager of (the Queensland Rugby League representatives). The Mayor ('Mr G. J. Wallace) presided, there also being present on the stage Messrs H. MeEwan (vice-president Canterbury Rugby League), de Wolfe (New Zealand Rugby League), and P. J. Smythe (Timaru). Referring to the recent defeat of the New .South Wales Rugby team at the hands of New Zealand, Mr .Sunderland said 'that it had been freely stated that no other team 'could live with the All Blacks. He had forthwith issued a challenge to the All Blacks to play his team one spell at League at the other at Rugby. No reply being forthcoming, he would now go a step further, and state publicly that the Queensland team -was prepared to play the All Blacks on Saturday, October 10, at their own game, and on their own ground. He w r as also prepared to allow one of their own referees, Mr Meredith, to control the game. He had received much abuse over his previous challenge, but was fully prepared to stand by his challenge and also allow the gate to be devoted to New Zealand charities. (Applause). A voice: How will you get on? Mr Sunderland: How will we get on? We will play the game like men, and if beaten shake hands with oifr opponent's like men and tell them they are a great side. Mr Sunderland further said that he did not think that the AH Blacks had been thoroughly tested. The engagement is announced of Lois Marion, only daughter of Mr and Mrs E. ■Blackmore, “,St. Leonards,” Temuka, to Roland Stavers, only son of Mr and Mrs J. R. Smith, St. Albans, Christchurch.
