UNEMPLOYED.
4*_J LIST OF 1242 IN WELLINGTON. A deputation, representing about three hundred men, waited on the Prime Minister and the Minister for Public Works at Wellington on Thursday. It was introduced by Mr P. Fraser, M.P.. for Wellington Central, who stated that the registrations of unemployed now numbered 1242. Mr Malssey, in reply, said the difficulty appeared to arise from the fact that many men, who were employers a few months ago, especially in the country, were now unable owing to the fall In prices to keep labour at work. The money spent by the Government this year, on public works ran into £6,000,000. Some of that was spent on material, but for labour alone he had found £250,000. Now that was all gone and he was prepared to find another £IOO,000. iThey would not stop works or put men off while the need continued. There were 6700 men employed on public works in New Zealand. The Prime Minister said" if any men were willing to go up country he would find work for them. The Hon. J. G. Coates said that he thought he could place sixty or seventy men immediately. , The Ministers agreed to do anything they could to get the corporation to have any local work placed on an organised basis.
